Goals by Jermaine Jenas and Darren Bent dented Aston Villa's hopes of securing a Champions League place.
Jenas put the visitors in front when he forced home a parry from goalkeeper Brad Friedel after just four minutes. Darren Bent slid in to make sure Robbie Keane's angled shot went over the line early in the second half.
Substitute John Carew gave Villa hope with a towering header late on but it was not enough for Martin O'Neill's men to reclaim fourth spot in the Barclays Premier League.
