FA Cup review - Tues 17th March

Arsenal came from behind to beat Hull City 2-1 in their FA Cup quarter-final at the Emirates.

Nick Barmby put the visitors in front after just 13 minutes of this all Barclays Premier League contest. His angled volley from the left of goal struck Johan Djourou and looped over Lukasz Fabianski into the far corner.

The Gunners struggled to break down a resolute Tigers defence until 16 minutes from time when Andrey Arshavin unselfishly set up Robin van Persie for a simple close-range tap-in.

With six minutes remaining, William Gallas headed in from close range to secure Arsenal's first visit to the new Wembley for a semi-final against Chelsea on 18th April.

cruel blow

Gallas looked offside as he forced home the winner but referee Mike Riley allowed the goal to stand.

It was a cruel blow to Hull City who had battled so hard in a bid to repeat their shock 2-1 win at the Emirates in the Barclays Premier League in September.

Barmby's opener was a reward for their early enterprise and the former Tottenham Hotspur player thought he had doubled the lead shortly afterwards but his opportunist strike was ruled out for offside.

Geovanni, who hit a stunning goal in that earlier victory at the Emirates, tried his luck from long range again but Fabianski mde a fingertip save

The Tigers remained dangerous with a header from Kamil Zayatte dropping on the roof of the net.

As half-time loomed, only a sliding block from Samuel Ricketts prevented Arshavin drilling in Walcott's low cross, then the Russian flashed a right-foot volley across the face of goal as the Gunners began to force their way into the match.

In the second half Abou Diaby's header from a corner bounced just inches the wrong side of the post, Arshavin had another close-range effort blocked, then Djourou's header was cleared off the line - with Alex Song hooking the loose ball wide.

Van Persie then forced the visiting keeper into a full-stretch save from his bending, 25-yard free-kick before seeing a looping header hit the top of the bar with Myhill beaten.

The equaliser came through van Persie with 16 minutes left. Substitute Nicklas Bendtner's persistence in the penalty area paid off when he stabbed the ball across to Arshavin, who pulled it back for the Dutchman to score.

Bendtner had a close-range shot blocked behind by Ricketts but Arsenal won it with six minutes to go when Gallas nodded in from an offside position.
