Playing his first doubles tournament of the year, World No. 4 singles player Andy Murray teamed with fellow Briton Ross Hutchins to defeat Tomas Berdych and Nicolas Kiefer Friday to reach the second round of the BNP Paribas Masters, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Indian Wells. Despite converting just one of nine break point opportunities and losing the second set to love, the Brits held on to win 6-4, 0-6, 10-7.
Murray has won 10 singles titles but has reached just one doubles final, finishing runner-up in Bangkok in 2006.
ATP World Tour Champion Rafael Nadal also hit the doubles court Friday, teaming with fellow Spaniard Marc Lopez to defeat Frantisek Cermak and Michal Mertinak 7-6(2), 4-6, 10-7. The Spanish duo is guaranteed an interesting second-round clash against either the top-seeded Bryan brothers or Roger Federer and Yves Allegro.
Third seeds Mahesh Bhupathi and Mark Knowles broke serve five times in a 7-5- 6-3 win over Russians Igor Kunitsyn and Dmitry Tursunov. The veteran duo is seeded to meet Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa in the quarterfinals.
World No. 7 Andy Roddick teamed with fellow American Mardy Fish to defeat French duo Jeremy Chardy and Gilles Simon 6-3, 6-4. They could face eighth seeds Marcelo Melo and Andre Sa in the second round if the Brazilians overcome Mario Ancic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
