Premier League Football News

Liverpool 5-0 Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard scored a hat-trick as Liverpool signalled their ambition with a 5-0 victory over Aston Villa.

Gerrard scored a deadball hat-trick as Liverpool stormed to within one point of leaders Manchester United at the head of the Barclays Premier League.

Villa were swept aside, with Dirk Kuyt and Albert Riera getting the show on the road before Gerrard took over.

His first goal was a penalty after Riera had been felled in the box, and the second an edge of the area free-kick.

The third for Gerrard was another penalty, when Brad Friedel was sent-off for bringing down Fernando Torres as he raced onto a Xabi Alonso through-ball.

Manchester City 1-0 Sunderland

Manchester City bagged all three points against Sunderland after a 1-0 win at the City of Manchester Stadium.

Sunderland remain in the thick of the desperate struggle to escape relegation from the Barclays Premier League after the bravery of their 10 men went unrewarded as Manchester City.

Micah Richards' second-half header proved enough, with goalkeeper Marton Fulop preventing City increasing their advantage with a string of fine saves near the end in addition to a Robinho penalty save.

But try as Sunderland might, they were always in trouble once George McCartney had been red carded for a professional foul on Shaun Wright-Phillips after just 15 minutes.

Wigan Athletic 1-0 Hull City

Wigan Athletic beat Hull City by a single goal at the JJB Stadium in the Barclays Premier League.

Midfielder Ben Watson scored the only goal as Wigan missed a host of chances before beating struggling Hull at the JJB Stadium.

It appeared the Latics were heading for their seventh blank in 10 Barclays Premier League matches after Mido and Hugo Rodallega had twice each missed chances.

However, Watson, signed from Crystal Palace in January, scored his second goal in a week with a looping 84th-minute volley.
